Gulzar is a nationally and internationally acclaimed poet, filmmaker, lyricist and writer. He grew up in Delhi before coming to Mumbai, where he was closely associated with the Progressive Writers Movement. His creative repertoire includes poems, short stories, scripts plays, ballets, music albums, serials and books for children. His works have been translated into many languages. He has received numerous awards including the prestigious National Award (seven times), 21 Filmfare Awards, Padma Bhushan (Indian Government’s third highest civilian award) and India’s foremost literary honour Sahitya Akademi Award for Best Urdu Writer. He won the Oscar and Grammy in 2009 for Best Original Song ‘Jai Ho’ in the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
