Athol Fugard was considered one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century. His plays were known for their biting commentary on society, and their deep political and psychological insight. He also wrote the acclaimed novel ‘Tsotsi’. As a strong opponent of apartheid, many of his plays demanded actors and characters of mixed races – a practice that was banned in the South Africa of the time. His final play ‘Concerning the Life of Babyboy Kleintjies’ was co-written with his wife, Paula Fourie. In this session, she speaks in depth to Athol Fugard’s work and memory, and his impact on South African society.
