Why Words Matter

Rutwik Deshpande

Poetry

Do you ever think about the first thought
That you ever thought?
If it came to you,
Or if you just stumbled upon it?

Do you remember the first word
That you ever said?
If you took your time with it
And made sure it's meaningful & profound

Or if you just blurted out
The last thing you heard?
I know none of this matters, but
Do you ever think about that? /

What about letters of the alphabet?
Do you think about them?
Do you lend your thoughts
To the poor letter 'I’ -

Which is a letter
And a word in itself?
Do you think about how lonely it feels
When it stands its solitary stand?

What about the letter ‘u’?
Which is so unselfish in its existence
That it promises to
Hold everything you put in it

Do you think 'o' gets really pissed off
When you confuse it with ‘zero’?
If it even cares about being original
Or if it doesn't care at all?

Do you spare a thought for ‘x’
Which is made up of 2 lines
That are lovers.
Do you see how they start off as strangers-

But eventually come closer
And fall in love so deeply
That at one point they literally become one; /
Before having an argument

And falling out- only to walk
On their separate paths
And become strangers again
Doesn't that make your heart weep? //

Do you ever think about words?
And what effect they have on people?
You know, whenever someone
Says the word ‘cake’

I smile half a smile.
Whenever someone uses the word 'vomit’
I throw up a little in my mouth
Does that happen to you too?

Why is it that whenever
Someone mentions summer
I feel slightly warmer?
Isn't it fascinating-

That when I say the word 'orange’
I'm thinking about a colour
But you could be thinking about, a fruit?
Words; words, they can do that to us. //

Well, what about sentences?
Do you ever take a moment
To think about the power they hold?
Just a bunch of random words coming together.

And us- trying to finds meaning within them.
Why is it that-
An ‘I love you’
Can make your day?

Why is it that saying-
"This song made me think you.”
Bring back so many memories?
How powerful are our sentences-

That saying - 'I have a dream’
Can change the course of a country?
Isn't it incredible- that simply saying
'You're not alone’- can save a life?

Do you ever think about
How these are just random sounds
And how they wouldn't make sense otherwise
But they do make sense-

Because we choose to believe in them
Do you think about how-
Words have the power to
Change lives & make a difference?

Do you ever think about all of this?
Yeah, yeah me neither. //
