We Found them

Mehr Jaiswal

Poetry

Heaven is a heavenly site
Flying mist stretches its mutilated arms towards the man’s vehicle of the sky
Mounds of clouds tickle its bare back, suspended over the pilot’s eyes like a helmet
Soft turbulence lulls us to sleep,
Synchronizing to a shaking tremble with the passenger’s snores as we reach
The second heaven
That which emerges softer, kinder, pinker

There are tornadoes of clouds spiralling like tyrants in the sky
Spinning tops falling from the stars of a black universe
An assembly,
I see the court jester, servants, maidens come in a stringent glow of luminous colours of the sky,
I see the king, masked face, his authority lost in the glamour of his kingdom
A dozen invaders chase along the soldiers,
whose armour has shed them along with the rain

I was among the clouds ablaze
Breathless
Entitled to see this inhumane sight
We dipped shortly to see flickers of light, a million beacons on a hundred million lives
Civilisation offered comfort and sorrow
My species identity was always a joy
But sorrow
Terror
Fear
For know I knew how close heaven was
And that I could not even know,
If it were hell

And between hell and heaven
Were flickers of thunder
Some singular, cast to knock sense into a renegade
Some plural, to jolt a nation
Some spasmic, like a sudden revelation
Some personal, pushing thoughts into my head that the mist from earlier had carried away

And we are nowhere now
Short bursts of light
Like blinking angles

And now though our perpendicular is steady, our angle tilts
A clear sky
As if it were a peaceful alien land
For this could not be humanity
And between all this we have know so far
Some tides have come to pass
Some moments have come to last

ALAS ALAS

And they have burned our land
The white lights below are ablaze like the clouds we passed
The horror of the things we thought would only pass us by
have instead become the horror we escaped

Our visions have become our present doom
Alas, the demons have burnt our land, our crop, our hand
When we set out on this journey to find them
And when we did,
We did not realise
That the things we often see find us as much as we find them

I see a trail
A bleeding trail across our land, our men dig up women heads and the rest all flee
One ensurging unrest
And all onwards weep
