Unchained
MALINI NAIR
Poetry
The turquoise waves soared high
Dashing down in ecstasy
The simmering white foam
Dancing in gleeful defiance
There, a rusted iron chain
Broken, carried by the wave
A piece of it tossed lifelessly
By a thundering wall of water
Who was it that believed
Chains to them did not belong
And saw them fall away
Like a tree shedding its autumn leaves
She knelt, weighed by metal and silence
Until phoenix-like she rose above anguish
The angry scars around her neck
Glowered as the chains became mere flotsam
The orange horizon turned indigo
Waves shimmered in the moonlight
Silver rays painted the seething sea
As tides swallowed the relic of bondage
She screamed until the waves shivered
She soared with the waves, and rode the foam
Her laughter wafted into the air
Weaving itself into the clouds above
