There is a bee in my room
Ayesha Arya
Poetry
There’s a bee in my room and it won’t leave
each day as I head to the job I hate
I leave the door wide open so that the bee may escape
but the bee stays and for the life of me I can’t explain
when the door’s open, why the bee won’t fly away
I lay at night in torment about the life I hate
while the bee keeps me company in my despair
buzzing through the night into the day
I leave the door open again in hopes it will fly away
only to come home and find it sitting behind the window
after hours of banging against it in dismay
but I no longer care with hundreds of emails to go through
and wonder how long my life will stay this way
the bee doesn’t buzz through the night anymore
it just sits still and stares out the window
I try to whack it towards the open door
but the bee doesn’t leave and there’s nothing I can do or say
I can’t pick up my mother’s incessant calls anymore
I hate my life and there’s nothing that can be done
once again I leave the door open wide
but on the third day I come home to find the bee has died
I see it’s lifeless body and can’t believe
if the door was wide open, why didn’t the bee just leave
