The Vagrancies of Time
Baisali Chatterjee Dutt
Poetry
When my father fell ill and was admitted to the hospital, he was being looked after by two of my husband’s doctor friends.
He was so grateful he said he would gift them both Rolex watches once he got out of the hospital, as a ‘thank you’ for saving his life.
The irony is this wish came from a man who had himself worn the same watch for 35 years. A watch that had been gifted to him by his father-in-law during the wedding.
Only a heart as generous as his could come up with such a sentiment.
But the thing is, Baba, your life was not theirs to save.
And you do know, don't you Baba, that I would have given one whole year of my life just for 24 more good hours with you?
I guess, that bargain was not mine to make.
