The House That Remembers
Anchal Singh
Prose
As I strolled past the row of houses, my eyes scanned each one, trying to find the one that held the memory of our late-night conversation. The image of the street where I dropped you off lingered in my mind, a snapshot frozen in time. Among the houses adorned with sunflowers and roses, one stood out to me as your possible home.
I could vividly imagine you climbing the stairs to your room during our 2 a.m. talk. The memory of that moment when you confessed your love for the first time replayed in my mind like a movie scene. The weight of those three powerful words hung in the air, causing me to drop the book I held in my hand, as if time itself had paused to acknowledge the significance of your declaration.
The following morning, I awoke still under the enchantment of your words, savoring them like a delectable dish from the night before. However, the passage of time has a way of slowly fading memories, like a gentle tide washing away footprints in the sand. There may come a time when we struggle to recall even the sound of each other's voices, let alone the profound moment we shared.
Yet, the essence of our love will always linger in the spaces we once inhabited together. The sofa in your room, the four walls that witnessed our conversations, the colorful roses outside your window - they will hold onto the echoes of our love long after we have moved on. Our homes serve as silent museums of our past, preserving the moments that shaped us.
But as the hands of time inexorably tick forward and our homes are dismantled or our cherished possessions scattered to the winds, it's as if we are consigned to the realm of oblivion once more. Who will remember the love we once shared, the tender innocence that imbued our world with magic at the mere utterance of those three words? We may fade from memory, but the imprint of our love will remain etched in the walls, the floors, and the very essence of the spaces we once called home.
