'THE FORGOTTEN LAMP'
Soudamini shankar
Poetry
Have you ever on your very early morning run,
When it’s still dark outside, seen the sodium vapor lamp from the night before,
Still burning an orange glow,
before the horizon sees the new day’s sun?
Or maybe you had to be somewhere,
so you step out early,
You get into the cab that you had called for the night before,
The cab that is now at your door,
It’s an unassuming sedan, creamy white and pearly.
You look at the driver as he sits there with his morning hymns in the car,
“Is he a morning person?
Or is it for the honest man too, a little too early?”
Then, you see the sodium vapor lamp again still burning from the night before,
As the soft daylight floods in through the skies,
now a shade somewhere between a lilac, and a pink,
The lamp is still there, burning an orange glow,
Like it’s been painted with an old, enchanted, incandescent ink.
Has everybody forgotten about this lamp?
Is it everywhere we go?
Is it the same lamp that we all see?
I just had to know.
