The Fall It Takes

Rehana Sulthana

Prose

For a brief second, he appeared lucid. But then again, he argued I was wrong.
“She could be bleeding because she really fell. Why would she even lie?” He asked. I slapped my forehead in response. It was hard enough that it throbbed where my palm hit.
“Because it is not possible to hurt oneself that way. There must be something else,” I replied.
“Why do you always act like you know better? We should accept what the mother said. And remember who the senior here is,” he said.
“Here we go again.” I threw my hands up in frustration and watched him write: “Alleged history of a three-year-old who fell and landed on a sharp object at home, injuring her vagina. Patient has been bleeding since….” I had to stop him there. I couldn’t in my right mind accept it as the whole truth.
“We should mark this case medico-legal. The history sounds too suspicious and the girl is severely injured. She needs a thorough examination under anaesthesia.”
“It will be done. But no MLC as of now. You are always looking for some drama,” he replied. I huffed.
“I am a woman, too. I know that if I fall now and land myself on a sharp object, my vagina wouldn’t take such a bad hit.”
He slammed his pen against the desk. Turning around dramatically, he placed his finger over his lips and shushed me. “Are you out of your mind? People can hear you,” he whispered.
“Let them. What’s wrong? Don’t we talk about anuses, penises, vaginas as doctors all the time?”
“Still...context really matters. Do not talk about yourself like that. It’s a shame.”
I lost it at that moment and yanked the pen away from his hand. “I think I must take this case from here on.”
“I am the senior here,” he retaliated.
“I don’t think it really matters. And yes, there is an old man with a foreign body in his rectum after accidentally falling on a pipe at work in bed number twenty. I feel he needs your attention first,“ I smirked. He shook his head dismissively.
“Do not go around messing with other seniors like this. If only we weren’t friends already…” He turned around and walked away. The rest of his words were just a buzz.
I looked at the feeble child wincing in pain. She had come with a gush of blood from her vagina without any signs of external injuries. Her undergarment was unharmed too. It was as if she was undressed before the trauma happened.
Her mother standing next to her sobbed nonstop. She wouldn’t answer anyone and kept repeating, “She was only playing with me in our room and then fell over the edge of our bed.”
“So, where’s the father?” I asked her, understanding the child needed more attention from her family. But she wouldn’t heed it either.
I sighed, finished the rest of the summary, pulled out the medico-legal form and began filling in the details.
“See, this is just a formality. A formal inquiry will be done by the police after…” Suddenly, her mother fell to my feet and burst into tears. “Please madam, don’t do this. He will kill us both…” she begged.
The child’s pleading eyes looked away.
