Proof Of Human

Oninthough

Poetry

Before you enter,
please prove you are human.

Select every square
containing a traffic light.

A bicycle.
A crosswalk.
A pedestrian.

Easy.
Try again.

Select every square
containing a family.
Ignore the man
standing behind them.
He is the plumber.

Try again.

Select every square
containing a worker.
Not the man in the suit.
He owns the company.
Not the woman with the broom.
She works for him.

Try again.

Select every square
containing a human being.
Take your time.

Some are undocumented.
Some are unemployed.
Some are incarcerated.
Some are homeless.
Some are foreign.
Some are frightening.
Some are hungry.
Some are armed.
Some are children.
Some are children
who have done terrible things.
Some are adults
who have done worse.

Select all that apply.

You hesitate.
That is normal.
Human beings
are complicated images.

Try again.

This time,
select every square
containing someone
whose life matters.

You click.
And click.
And click.

The screen goes black.

Then:

ERROR.
TOO MANY HUMANS DETECTED.

Please remove the ones
you do not recognise.

You begin again.

You remove the poor.
The violent.
The foreign.
The inconvenient.
The guilty.
The innocent
who happen to resemble the guilty.

You keep removing people
until the screen finally turns green.

VERIFIED.
You have successfully proved
that you are human.

Thank you.
You may now proceed.

There are still
some people left to remove.
