Manufacturing Defect

Jiniya Chatterjee

Poetry

I was so tired.
I was trudging along the way
in the scorching heat of day.
My hands were feeling heavy,
I was carrying them for so long,
I don't think I was so strong
to bear the weight of those.

What, you ask?
Oh, nothing much.
Just 359 pieces of my broken heart.
Nothing to worry as such.
Needed someone who could fix these pieces.
If only I could find someone.

Walked along for quite some time
before I came across this guy
in the prime of his youth.
Everything about him screamed PROMISING!
So I walked up to him and asked,
"Could you please fix my broken heart?"
He looked at me for a minute or two,
And then asked- "Who are you?
I'm sorry but I don't know,
Please excuse me, gotta go."

Weird guy, thought I, and walked on.
Suddenly, I spotted a woman, whose hair was completely white.
She gave me a smile so bright,
And said- "Come hither, my child,
or else you'll wander off into the wild.
I have the solution to all your worries!"
"Really? You do?" I asked.
"My heart is broken. Can you fix it?"
"Of course", she said,
And then waved a broom over my head.
I stood patiently, while she chanted something to herself.
And then said- "Here's a sacred needle and thread.
I'll piece together the pieces of your heart one by one and---"
Before she could finish, I waved my hand and said,
"Thank you, but I think I'll look somewhere else instead."

Shoulders slumped, I walked on,
and then spotted that one thing I was looking for.
'God's Warehouse of Human Manufacturing'.
I stormed inside and shouted,
"Hey God! What kind of a defective piece is this?
One blow and it cracks,
Can't withstand even a single attack.
I want it replaced NOW."

To my surprise, God's eyes lit up with amusement
They just laughed and said,
"Well, my darling,
I never promised a guarantee.
Never said that I could guarantee its durability,
so don't blame me!"

I stared at him in fury,
hot breath leaving my nostrils,
and just before I could lash out,
God said- "Calm down.
I can't replace your broken heart,
but I know someone who can fix it!"

"What? You do?
Who is it? Tell me!"
I asked.
Dealing with God was such a task.

"Wait a minute", God said,
and disappeared inside.
I waited.
Tears were welling up in my eyes,
I hadn't cried in a really long time.
Just when the downpour was about to start,
God came out, holding a large, wrapped object in those hands
and said-
"This is the fix that you need.
No more books you'll have to read.
This is the thing that will do the deed,
Go ahead and take a look!"

I lifted the cloth
and could immediately see.
I had looked for it everywhere,
But hadn't realized that the cure for my broken heart was right there.
From the mirror,
she
was staring back
at me.
