Getting Intimate

Jiniya Chatterjee

Poetry

Tried all kinds of romance,
Some flippant, some that took me in a trance,
But there's nothing like the romance
That you can have
with memories.

You can bring things to mind
Every now and then,
You can relive a long lost past
as and when
you feel like it.

Memories never betray.
Unlike people.
Memories of a dreamy past gone by
When what escaped the lips was only a smile, not a sigh...
When you didn't have to question why
you deserved it all.

Memories are faithful.
Unlike people.
They never leave your side,
They always come to the aid
of your broken heart.
Whenever you need them.
Just close your eyes and think.
The garden, shrubbery and the trees,
The melody in your ears, the hum of bees,
Or the waves of the ocean, and the cool breeze.
The highest point from which the city could be seen,
And time would freeze.
The company of loved ones,
Glances exchanged, and smiles.
When the only thing you wanted,
Was time to wait a while.

Memories stay.
Unlike people.
People go away.
Be it a span of years,
Or a matter of minutes,
Memories of the good things
will stay.
And will be there at your beck and call.
To heal, support and pick up all
the pieces of a heart that's broken,
a mind that's shaken.
That's why,
If you want to be in love, yet happy and free,
The best romance you'll ever get
is the romance of memories.
