Cliché

Jiniya Chatterjee

Poetry

Hated cliches since the beginning.
Never wanted to fall into the rut everyone was falling into.
And then one day,
You came along.
The most clichéd cliché of my life.
With you, I was everything I had never wanted to be.
Saw things in places I never imagined I would see.
With you, I did things I never thought I would do.
Amazing how some people make you do things you had resolved you would never do.

Those sudden little spots of colour on your cheeks,
Those moments when in your knees you go weak,
Those fantasies, those fairy lands
where we walk together, hand in hand.
Those clichéd lines, exactly like the ones above,
Those sappy sayings of heartbreak and love...
Argh! Look where I'm going with the cheesy lines,
Like the time I told you, 'Hey! You look fine!'
And then expected you to say,
"Will you be mine?
Will you share your 'forever' with me?
(Taking the liberty to borrow from Archibald MacLeish)
Doesn't matter if we don't mean anything, let's just be?"

I guess it had slipped out of my mind
that things like these you can only find
in fiction and fantasy.

And then, one day,
You left.
Just like that.
What remained is a large, gaping void.
An abyss filled with blackness.
I thought the silver lining is that I wouldn't have to deal with clichés anymore.

Though, in that abyss, I see flashes of nostalgic experience,
Just sometimes, when I have nothing to do...
I'm left with only the remnants of a broken heart now.
Wait, isn't that a cliché too?
