Breaking the monotony

Jiniya Chatterjee

Poetry

It gets very monotonous at times.
Sitting in the same place, doing the same thing over and over and over again.
To break the monotony, my favourite thing to do is look out of the window.
Passing cars, wandering people.
I don't know how time flies when I stare out the window.
Sometimes, I also like to stroll over to my backyard to have a look around.
And my favourite view?
The one of your street.
I've almost memorised the number and position of scratches on your car.
I know exactly when every member of your family goes and comes.
I also think I've seen every single shirt you have in your wardrobe because you wear a different
one every day.
I still remember the day you and your family moved in here. So much hustle bustle, so much
chaos.
But you all seemed so happy.

I think I can also see your thoughts.
By now I've deciphered every single pattern of creases on your forehead.
You're my favourite pastime.
I just wish I could speak to you someday.
But every time you look at me, I feel like you're looking.... right through me.
The street seems like it has a mind of its own.
It brings up haunting memories.
Breaking the monotony....

I sometimes walk down to the church, adjoining which is a cemetery.
I never like to go in there, but inevitably do.
What catches my attention is the fancy tombstone near the bushes on the left.
Strangely, it has my name on it.
