A Dream I Carried (One Sided Love)
Bhumika kothari
Poetry
You were a dream I held for four long years
a quiet hope tucked into the soft corners of my heart.
When we finally met, something shifted;
Our hearts spoke louder than our words,
Our eyes made promises we didn’t know how to say out loud.
We held each other’s feelings
more gently than our own,
believing love could build a home,
a safe place
where both of us could finally breathe.
But the fear of losing each other
grew heavier than the future we imagined.
I wanted that home with you.
I wanted it so badly.
But the last time we met,
you felt far away
like someone closing a door without making a sound.
I tried to show you my love,
but my efforts slipped through your silence.
My I love you's landed empty,
because your heart had already turned
toward a life without me in it.
And then, when I saw you break down in front of God,
something inside me cracked open.
I prayed
honestly prayed
to take your pain,
to carry your hurt,
just so you could breathe again.
But deep down, I already knew.
Your love for me was gone.
I needed to hear the truth from you
and when you said you only saw me as a friend,
when you questioned the love I built my whole heart around,
something in me broke for good.
Letting you go is the only way
to stop myself from drowning.
And yes, a part of me still loves you
but I’ll bury it silently,
carry it alone,
and never let it touch your life again.
The dream of “us” I held so close
was mine and mine alone
I realized it only when
your love crumbled quietly
into ashes at my feet.
