The Science of Falling Apart Quietly

42

Poetry

Have you ever heard of Homeostasis?
Biology defines it as the ability of a living organism to maintain a stable internal environment so it doesn’t fall apart.

But Psychological Homeostasis?
That’s defined as the state when the body is functioning but the mind is withering.
Quietly.
Efficiently.
Like a well-oiled machine bleeding beneath its gears.

Physics establishes latent heat as the heat absorbed or released during a phase change with no rise in temperature.
A solid can melt and the thermometer won’t flinch.
A student can unravel and the world won’t notice.
Because slipping grades are prioritized over fading smiles.
Because the world doesn’t care about what it can’t quantify.

Until one day a student becomes a statistic.
And no one knows why.

But if a study by Berridge and Robinson (1998) proved dopamine isn’t a sign of pleasure but of desire,
Not of satisfaction, but of starvation,
then are we not just lab rats
trained to chase the next piece of cheese
in a world that world doesn’t notice?

Because the world is much like a dictator.
And dictators don’t notice voices that question.

A student once studied so hard for an exam,
that when she finally sat down to write it,
she vomited out the remains of the meals
she didn’t eat the day before.

When she woke up in the infirmary, her first words weren’t: “Where am I?”
They were: “Can I still write the paper?”

Because she was taught that if she is not breaking,
then she is not trying hard enough.
That being tired is a sign of dedication.
That burnouts are a badge of effort.
That no one claps for a student who quits.

And somehow, every adult in the room
thought that was admirable.

Until one day,
she didn’t show up to class.

And posters were stuck on walls with half-hearted glue.
And a bench was removed from her classroom overnight
As if it no longer belonged there.
And everyone whispered about how sudden it was.

But it wasn’t.
She fell apart in plain sight.
Just quiet enough
for the world
to recalibrate its homeostasis.
