The Last Call

85

Prose

Lin’s phone vibrated. ‘Who is calling me at this ungodly hour?’ A sense of fear crept through her. Did something happen to her parents? Is there an emergency? Did somebody die? The fear tightened her heart making her unable to breath
It was an unknown number.
Her eyes glued at the phone screen until it stopped. She had deliberately missed the call. Assuring herself that it must have been a wrong number she kept her phone on the bed side table.
The phone vibrated again. It stopped. It vibrated. It stopped. It vibrated.
Three missed calls.
Lin held the phone with her trembling hand. She looked around her dark room, as if it would give her an answer. She went back and forth with her thoughts. She frightened easily, so the late-night call with an unknown number was easy to frighten her. Her anxiety scored ridiculously high at the moment.
The caller called again.
‘Hel…hello’ Her throat felt dry.
Just as she answered she heard a knock.
‘Lin.. Lin, listen to me.’ The voice at the other end ordered.
‘Wha..what?’ Lin looked confused. The voice sounded like her. She checked the phone number.
The knocking continued.
‘Lin do not open the door.’ The voice warned.
What!! How did the person know about the knocking? She looked at the door and at the phone.
‘Hello.. hello…Lin are you listening? Do not open the door?’ The person continued.
The knocking was louder and hurried.
‘Lin, do not open the door. Please listen to me first. I’ll explain everything but do not open the door. Your life depends on it.’ The voice was begging now.
Lin stopped when she heard the word life.
‘Who are you?’ Lin asked confused, ‘and how do you know that someone is knocking at my door.’
‘I.. I…’ the person hesitated.
‘Well go on! I don’t have time for this. Lin was angry and irritated.
‘I am YOU from the future.’ The person said.
There was a long pause.
‘Lin.. lin… are you listening? You’ve to believe me or else−
‘Or else what?’ Lin raised her voice.
The knocking has stopped.
‘Or else you die.’ The voice warned.
Lin dropped her phone in shock. Did she not have her meds today? She was supposed to start a new med this evening. She looked at her bed side table. The medicine tube hadn’t been opened.
The knocking continued again.
Dropping by her phone, Lin’s heart began to beat faster. Her body shook with great tremor, her head felt heavy and dizzy.
‘Run…Run…’ the voice from the phone kept begging.
The knocking continued persistently and loudly.
Lin could feel her small room becoming smaller and smaller until it was hard for her to breathe. She had collapsed as the voice from the phone and the door echoed through her head.
One month later.
‘So, Rosalinda, tell me about your last call.’ The lady with a diary and a pen asked.
Her eyes wide and vacant, Lin smiled unnaturally wide.
