Cost of a Dream

Poetry
I once loved a doll,
And wished to buy it one day;
I promised myself,
I'll find some way.
Years passed,
And the day seemed closer;
The child within me awaited,
She would finally get to be a chooser.
"A few more days,
Just hang in there;"
I kept telling her,
I was getting somewhere.
A few more years,
She patiently waited for the day;
I kept telling her,
"We have bills to pay."
I once stumbled upon the store,
And set her free;
I wanted to see her jump,
As she went on a shopping spree.
The doll was as pretty as ever,
Finally, I made it to this day;
But the child in me said,
"It's okay, we've bills to pay!"
I failed her, I guess,
I said, "I'm sorry";
She held my hand,
And assured I needn't worry.
"You did your best," she said,
"I've seen you strive;
But the dreams you have been fighting for,
Are no longer alive."
"I've grown with you,
And have seen you become a child;
As I started to become calm,
I've seen you step into the wild.
I know you can now afford,
All that I do not wish to buy;
I now love the peace,
That comes with a clear sky."
She still asked me to make a promise,
She said she doesn't need a single dime;
I'm still asking her to hang in there,
Today, she has asked for my time.
