Kamala Ganesh is a prominent sociologist and a student of Carnatic music, trained under distinguished gurus. She was formerly Professor and Head of Sociology, University of Mumbai. Her special interests are gender, caste and kinship, culture and identity. Her book ‘Boundary Walls: Caste and Women in a Tamil community’ won the Asiatic Society of Bombay’s silver medal. Her co-edited book ‘Zero Point Bombay: In and around Horniman Circle’ was included among the ten best books set in Mumbai by the Guardian newspaper, London. She writes on musical cultures and is currently engaged in researching Muslim Nagaswaram artistes.
