Jaywant Dalvi is considered to be one of the giants of Marathi literature, especially playwriting. Through more than 75 books and 16 plays he portrayed the social and individual psyche of Maharashtrians with consummate range, accuracy and sensitivity. He wrote about love, loneliness, insanity, hope, ambition, and was prophetic in his portrayal of repressive and declining social mores with the anguish and violence that could ensue. But all was not darkness - his work was sprinkled with light humour and one of his best loved writings was the tongue in cheek column 'Thanthanpaal’ in which he gently satirised popular Marathi writers of the day.
It is most fitting that in Dalvi’s centenary year, Marathi has received classical language status and it is hoped that this will reprise an interest in translating iconic works in Marathi to other languages.
Watch prominent contemporary Marathi actors pay tribute to, and bring to life, the work and memories of the unparalleled Jaywant Dalvi.
