When I Come Back
Amishi Shah
we’ll have a party
you and me,
and all the people we love.
i’ll cut my hair short again,
put on a sundress
the color of tangerines.
we’ll drink wine from the bottle,
eat berries from cartons,
& dessert tarts topped with lemon cream.
there’ll be some singing, more dancing
no one will worry about leaving
or who’s watching.
we’ll find a minute
amidst the crowd,
you’ll cradle my face
like you always do
to tell me you care
without admitting it aloud.
the moon will rise
as the music slows
i’ll fall asleep
against your shoulder,
and when we wake up
i’ll have forgotten the winter.
