The Unexplored self

Bushra Khatri

The inner child lives for the wants and needs that the real self did not get
Running after momentary pleasures
Running after the absent love
Just waiting for a glimpse of something shiny, bright and new

The inner adult lives to perfect itself
Living in the past and the future
Living to fill the incomplete puzzle pieces
Just trying to avoid the imperfections of the surrounding adults

But who lives in the present?
Which part, which self, which version?
Is it the child or the adult
Or someone who is constantly running back and forth between the two
Each influencing the other

The inner child constantly making the self look for the unmet needs of the past, to perfect the future
Constantly clinging to the inner childs picture of adulthood

And the inner adult constantly working to make sure that the strings are detached
Toiling after the independency,
To run away from the inner child and look like an adult
Racing to always be better than before

In the end,
The inner conflict survives and thrives in the present
Making the self question everything
And leaving one with the mystery of whether the real self will bloom or go boom
