The Little One That Could

Naaz Abdul Khadar

At the end of 10th Cross Road,in a bustling hub of Bangalore, stood a majestic, tall yet lone champak tree whose bright yellow flowers emanated a heady aroma that the autumn breeze could not resist sharing with passersby below. The breeze carried the sweet scent to all creatures great and small in the city and many squirrels, sparrows and barbets called this tree home. And on the highest branch,at the edge of the top-most leaf lived a tiny yet plump caterpillar whose name was Joy and it was as happy as one could be.A juicy green leaf to munch on all day, surrounded by fragrance,a fantastic view of the city and a carefree life,Joy had everything she ever hoped for.Day by day as she grew plumper, relishing every moment, little did she realise that her green leaf was shrinking. As the season progressed, one day the Autumn breeze whispered, 'my dear caterpillar,I may soon grow stronger and it is time to move on to a bigger leaf'. 'But this is my home and I'm safe', she thought and she dismissed this as a figment of her imagination.'As long as I can still see my 6 legs at the edge of the leaf I have no reason to move', she comforted herself and she stayed rooted to her spot. The days passed and the breeze gradually grew stronger and once again she cautioned,'dear Joy, the time has come to find a bigger leaf, a new home.I'm growing powerful day by day and may blow you away'.Joy could still see a little patch of green near her legs and was sure that would be sufficient and so she remained complacent and glued to her spot. Then one day the breeze turned into a wind that was so strong that it shook all the branches of the mighty champak tree. The branches swayed left and right ferociously. The other residents of the tree lay low and safe in their nests. The wind became a gust and soon the frail leaves came tumbling down.Joy shrieked in fear and she clung on to her bare little leaf. The gust huffed and puffed and with one strong blow the caterpillar was off the leaf and she fell below.'Hang on Little One',said the tree as Joy curled herself into a ball and bounced off from one leaf to another.'I'm scared.I cannot do this',she cried and closed her eyes waiting to be blown away to oblivion. As she continued her unsteady descent, the tree with her wise and gentle voice coaxed, 'don't give up. You can do this. All you need to do is stretch your legs a bit and feel your feet.Try one more time.Just hang on'.With trepidation Joy slowly uncurled herself and started to grasp at the edges of the leaves with her legs. One foot caught a leaf. Then the other one did too.Gradually all 3 pairs of legs anchored her to the leaf. She held on to her dear life wishing for this nightmare to end.The gust of wind stopped. It was over.Joy slowly opened her eyes. She was alive! Shaken, with a slight tremble, she moved one foot forward and then the other.Little emboldened she stepped out of the leaf and realised she could make her way from one leaf to another. She was home. She had the power in her all along.
