Tanned and blessed is my heart
Shaunak Bakshi
In the castle of Hades I stood
Full of foolish bravery, my ruby red robe with an enchanted hood
Surrounded by the bony resplendence of grinning skulls
Strewn in grotesque bloody patterns, like the wreckage of ship hulls
“WHAT DO YOU SEEK!” Boomed a voice
Ingratiating in quality, unearthly, albeit noise
“To join the one my heart belongs to” I choke
While lazily curling around me are thickening tendrils of smoke
The earth trembles as Hades’ mirth takes over
Gasping for air as the undead surrounding me glower
How did I elicit such a response from their king, they seem to say
As the air becomes scarce, on my chest a hand I splay
Suddenly the smoggy haze seems to thin
And I can make out a silhouette of my love, the embodiment of my sin
A sin because this much adoration is prophesied only for the divine
But I was just a mortal, a proverbial swine
I see brown eyes, shimmering in artificial sunlight
Silently imploring, “kiss us and live through this night”
So I oblige with a thousand or one kiss
Knowing deep down that all that I had been looking for was this
Those eyes stand guard, nestling the nose
Sculpted of quartz, with the beauty of a black rose
Just as rare, just as deadly
Oh, but looking at it my heart beats a medley
And if even that cannot save you, then those lips
Could melt the vainest of hearts with dips
In the pool of ethereal beauty, shaped like a heart
So dear, fashion from my soul a dart
A talisman for me to carry forever.
