I Write Because

Manveen Kaur

I wonder what has happened to me
To my life and to the world I see
Has anyone felt the same way as me
Has anyone dared to question or disagree

I write about the wounds that make my heart bleed
The wounds that are inflicted by the greed
The wounds that are ignored or denied
The wounds that are inherited or applied

I write about the people of the lands
The lands that were invaded by white hands
The hands that brought the guns and the disease
The hands that stole the gold and banned our beliefs

I write about the languages we now speak
The languages foreign to our creeks
The languages that silenced our sound
The languages that gave us no power or ground

I write about the caste that rules the earth
The caste that is determined pure at birth
The caste that claims to be elite
The caste that is puffed up with conceit

I write about the babies who are killed
By those who claim to be the victims still
The exile and the loss of the nation
The denial and the erasure of their culture

I write about the trauma that I wish to heal
The trauma that no one alone can deal
The trauma that is not mine or your personal flaw
The trauma that is not a natural law

I write because I want to make a change
I write because I want powers to rearrange
I write because I want to break the wall
I write because I want to free us all
