Breaking

Jiniya Chatterjee

Poetry

When the walls of safety come crumbling down,
And you're still trying to convince yourself
that it's all okay. Everything's fine.
But, is it, really?
Like a tiny, crawling insect,
it worms its way up to your mind.
Am I beautiful enough?
Am I smart enough?
Are my eyes pretty enough?
Is my smile charming enough?
You ponder and ponder.
And then, wonder-
Am I worthy enough?
A little too conscious you get,
And your eyes hunt for validation,
The way a tiger's eyes would hunt for its prey.
There seems to be no other way.

You plaster a smile on your questionable face,
Convincing yourself, you pass the days,
Until one night when you lie awake,
Of your existence, no sense you can make.
Your mind drifts towards that other girl
whom everyone called 'pretty' the other day,
Compliments rained on her every step of the way,
Whereas with a small smile, you slowly moved away.
Your mind screams, you want to claw your heart out,
Your facade of strength fades, what remains is only self- doubt.
The tear drop escapes, followed by a sob,
So far, you had been doing a pretty good job,
But oh! Sometimes things like these
make you want to please,
But remember mate, at the end of the night
When all hope seems out of sight,
In shining armour, you yourself will have to be your knight,
Who takes you from the dark tunnel towards the light,
And bravely puts up the ultimate fight,
There's no one else who can make it all right.
So get up, and face the new day.
You are beautiful. You are charming. You are smart.
You are important.
You. Are. Worthy.
The world needs you.
Insecurities are dangerous.
And you, my dear, are much more than your insecurities.
