The Great Gatsby, a story that follows its millionaire protagonist and his obsession with his former lover is the book in focus this year at Literature Live! The Mumbai Lit Fest 2025.
This 1925 novel by American Author F Scott Fitzgerald is set in the swinging Jazz age and reflects the extravagant and hedonistic lifestyle of the ultra rich on Long Island. A wry and poignant look at the famed American Dream, it was a literary social history of that time. Its brilliance lies in that a story of a rarefied elite reflected such a universal narrative that a 100 years later it still resonates around the world. Its themes of class, conspicuous consumption, new vs old wealth, social mobility, race, gender, urban vs pastoral conflict continue to be as relevant and contentious today as a century ago.
Nothing brings readers together quite like a shared love for stories. The Book in Focus contest celebrates this very spirit each year by spotlighting a remarkable novel and inviting readers to share their reflections on it.
This year, we turn to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby.
